I took both girls to get their haircut today. I was nervous. Abby's had her hair cut several times and right now she's decided she wants to grow it out, so it was really just a trim for her. But today was Grace's first haircut EVER! I have casually been asking around for the last few years to see if there was someone who knew how to cut African hair. I heard there was a woman at JCPenney who was African herself and did a great job. Then I saw a commercial saying that JCPenney was giving free kid's haircuts for the whole month of August. I set up the appointments and brought the girls in today. Now, I must tell you that when I wash Grace's hair and detangle it, she gets cranky and the tears always show up. I was nervous to bring her to a salon and to have her cry and throw a fit so I came prepared with toys, fruit snacks, etc. But....I didn't need any of it! She did great! Don't you love her smile? She was so excited and felt so grown up. She loved being able to look in the mirror and see Abby getting her hair cut too. I was so relieved and happy!
The other part of my nervousness came because I was afraid the stylist would be disappointed in the condition of her hair. Would she think it was too brittle? Would she disagree with my styling? Did she think I should change products for her hair? Endless questions. Was I a good mom when it came to understanding her hair? Well, today I got the greatest compliment. The stylist (with no prompting) said her hair is so healthy and asked what routine I was using with her because it looked great and I should keep doing what I'm doing because it's working well. I felt so relieved. Here's my Abby with her hair cut. She really really wants to grow it out so we just did a trim. I love her in bangs and it's so great to see her smile again. Such a sweetheart!
